BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis ranks among the prevalent skin disorders. Research has indicated a potential association with brain cancer. Yet, establishing a direct causal relationship between atopic dermatitis and brain cancer continues to be challenging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We extracted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with atopic dermatitis (sample size = 382 254) at a genome-wide level from a large Finnish Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) dataset (n cases = 15 208, n controls = 367 046). Summary data for 372 622 cases of brain cancer (n cases = 606, n controls = 372 016) were obtained via the IEU Open GWAS database. We employed the Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) method as our primary analytical approach for Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis. Additionally, heterogeneity was measured using Cochran's Q value, and horizontal pleiotropy was evaluated using MR-Egger 、Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier and leave-one-out analyses. RESULTS: The risk of brain cancer increases with the presence of atopic dermatitis, as evidenced by the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs),(OR = 1.0005; 95% CI = 1.0001, 1.0009; p = 0.0096). However, when conducting the analysis in reverse, no significant link was observed. CONCLUSION: The findings from our study indicate a causative link between atopic dermatitis and brain cancer, highlighting the importance of conducting broader clinical investigations into their potential association going forward.

INTRODUCTION: While Open Access (OA) journals provide free access to articles, they entail high article processing charges (APC), limiting opportunities for young researchers and those from low-middle income countries to publish OA. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, evaluating APC and academic impact of full OA (FOA) journals in infectious diseases (ID) and clinical microbiology (CM) compared to hybrid journals. Data were collected from Journal Citation Reports and journals' websites. RESULTS: Among 255 journals, median APC was 2850 (interquartile range [IQR] 1325-3654$). Median APC for 120 FOA journals was significantly lower than for 119 hybrid journals (2000, IQR 648-2767$ versus 3550, IQR 2948-4120$, p < 0.001). FOA journals had lower citation numbers and impact metrics compared to hybrid journals. CONCLUSION: While FOA ID/CM journals have lower APCs, they also lower academic impact compared to hybrid journals. These findings highlight the need for reforms in the publication process in view of achieving equitable data dissemination.

Lampranthus glaucus and Lampranthus glaucoides are only reported to have significant cytotoxic activity against certain cancer cell lines with phytochemical investigation of their petroleum ether and the ethyl acetate extracts. Further investigation was suggested concerning their hepatoprotective activity and relating it to the metabolic profile of their defatted methanol extracts using LC-ESI/MS analysis. Hepatoprotective activity was evaluated through assessment of three liver parameters as well as liver histopathological examination in thioacetamide-induced hepatotoxicity model. Sixty-eight and 26 phytochemicals were tentatively identified in L. glaucoides and L. glaucus, respectively, with phenolic compounds as the major class. Both plants showed significant inhibition of serum GPT and GOT levels, inhibition of tissue IL-1ß and TNF-α levels and inhibition of tissue NF-κß and caspase-3 gene expression proving hepatoprotective action. Liver treated with L. glaucoides showed lesion scoring range between negative to mild, whereas L. glaucus showed a range between mild to moderate.

BACKGROUND: Retraction of scientific publications is an important check on scientific misconduct and serves to maintain the integrity of the scientific literature. The present study aims to examine the prevalence, trends, and characteristics of retracted spine literature across basic science and clinical spine literature. METHODS: Multiple databases were queried for retracted papers relating to spine or spine surgery, between January 2000 and May 2023. Of 112,668 publications initially identified, 125 were ultimately included in the present study following screening by two independent reviewers. Journal of origin, reasons for retraction, date of publication, date of retraction, impact factor of journal, countries of research origin, and study design were collected for each included publication. RESULTS: Clinical studies were the most frequent type of retracted publication (n=70). The most common reason for retraction was fraud (n=58), followed by plagiarism (n=22) and peer review process manipulation (n=16). Impact factors ranged from 0.3 to 11.1 with a median of 3.75. Average months from publication to retraction across all studies was 37.5 months. The higher the journal impact factor, the longer the amount of time between publication and retraction (p = 0.01). China (n=63) was the country of origin of more than half of all retracted spine publications. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of retractions has been increasing over the past 23 years, and clinical studies have been the most frequently retracted publication type. Clinicians treating disorders of the spine should be aware of these trends when relying on the clinical literature to inform their practice.

The desirable wine aroma compounds 3-sulfanylhexan-1-ol (3SH) and 3-sulfanylhexyl acetate (3SHA) are released during fermentation from non-volatile precursors present in the grapes. This work explores the relative contribution of four precursors (E-2-hexenal, 3-S-glutathionylhexan-1-ol, 3-S-glutathionylhexanal, and 3-S-cysteinylhexan-1-ol) to 3SH and 3SHA. Through the use of isotopically labelled analogues of these precursors in defined fermentation media, new insights into the role of each precursor have been identified. E-2-Hexenal was shown to contribute negligible amounts of thiols, while 3-S-glutathionylhexan-1-ol was the main precursor of both 3SH and 3SHA. The glutathionylated precursors were both converted to 3SHA more efficiently than 3-S-cysteinylhexan-1-ol. Interestingly, 3-S-glutathionylhexanal generated 3SHA without detectable concentrations of 3SH, suggesting possible differences in the way this precursor is metabolised compared to 3-S-glutathionylhexan-1-ol and 3-S-cysteinylhexan-1-ol. We also provide the first evidence for chemical conversion of 3-S-glutathionylhexan-1-ol to 3-S-(γ-glutamylcysteinyl)-hexan-1-ol in an oenological system.

Background: The Web is an important source of health information, but the quality of such online information is highly variable. This study evaluates the quality of health articles published on Naver News, Korea's most popular portal, using the Health Information Quality Assessment Tool (HIQUAL). Methods: We collected 712 health-related articles published on Naver News from May 1 to 7, 2023. After applying exclusion criteria, we selected 116 articles for analysis. Two clinicians independently assessed the quality of these articles using the HIQUAL, which scores articles based on five domains: "reliability," "usefulness," "understandability," "sufficiency," and "transparency." Results: Overall article quality was generally considered recommendable (mean±standard deviation: 7.52±2.00). "Usefulness," one item of "reliability," and "understandability" were the three items with the highest levels of satisfaction. "Sufficiency" criteria for costs, risks, and benefits received low scores. Quality scores for articles focused on health risk factors and intervention showed a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: While the overall quality of health information in Korean online newspaper articles is acceptable, room for improvement remains in some areas, particularly with regard to the fair presentation of costs, risks, and benefits. The study highlights the need for ongoing quality improvement and evaluation initiatives for online health information.

Authors are often faced with the decision of whether to maximize traditional impact metrics or minimize costs when choosing where to publish the results of their research. Many subscription-based journals now offer the option of paying an article processing charge (APC) to make their work open. Though such "hybrid" journals make research more accessible to readers, their APCs often come with high price tags and can exclude authors who lack the capacity to pay to make their research accessible. Here, we tested if paying to publish open access in a subscription-based journal benefited authors by conferring more citations relative to closed access articles. We identified 146,415 articles published in 152 hybrid journals in the field of biology from 2013-2018 to compare the number of citations between various types of open access and closed access articles. In a simple generalized linear model analysis of our full dataset, we found that publishing open access in hybrid journals that offer the option confers an average citation advantage to authors of 17.8 citations compared to closed access articles in similar journals. After taking into account the number of authors, Journal Citation Reports 2020 Quartile, year of publication, and Web of Science category, we still found that open access generated significantly more citations than closed access (p < 0.0001). However, results were complex, with exact differences in citation rates among access types impacted by these other variables. This citation advantage based on access type was even similar when comparing open and closed access articles published in the same issue of a journal (p < 0.0001). However, by examining articles where the authors paid an article processing charge, we found that cost itself was not predictive of citation rates (p = 0.14). Based on our findings of access type and other model parameters, we suggest that, in the case of the 152 journals we analyzed, paying for open access does confer a citation advantage. For authors with limited budgets, we recommend pursuing open access alternatives that do not require paying a fee as they still yielded more citations than closed access. For authors who are considering where to submit their next article, we offer additional suggestions on how to balance exposure via citations with publishing costs.

BACKGROUND: It is essential to determine whether bone marrow signal changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) represent a physiological response or pathology; at present, the clinical significance of these signal changes is unclear. It is unknown whether a bone marrow biopsy is required when bone marrow signal changes are detected incidentally in individuals without suspected malignancy. OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether incidentally detected bone marrow signal changes on MRI performed for various reasons (at the time of admission or during follow-up) are clinically significant. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the bone marrow biopsy clinical and laboratory findings of 42 patients with incidental bone marrow signal changes on MRI between September 2016 and January 2020. We also determined whether the patients were diagnosed with malignancy during admission or follow-up. RESULTS: Of the 42 patients, three (7%) were diagnosed with hematological malignancies during admission, while two were diagnosed with multiple myeloma and one with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Of the 42 patients, 35 had a mean follow-up of 40.6 ± 5.3 months. One patient was diagnosed with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance four months after their first admission. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to MRI, detailed clinical and laboratory evaluations should be performed to inform the decision for bone marrow biopsy and exclude hematological malignancy. If there is any doubt, a bone marrow biopsy should be performed. Moreover, since bone marrow signal changes may be a preliminary finding, follow-up of these patients is essential.

Urban rivers are affected at different levels by the intensification of human activities, representing a serious threat to the maintenance of terrestrial life and sustainable urban development. Consequently, great efforts have been dedicated to the ecological restoration of urban rivers around the world, as a solution to recovering the environmental functionality of these environments. In this sense, the present work aimed to investigate the effectiveness of interventions carried out aimed at the recovery of urban rivers, through a systematic review of the literature between 2010 and 2022, using the search term "rivers recovery." The results showed that there have been notable advances in the implementation of river recovery programs in urban areas around the world between the years analyzed. The ecosystems studied were affected, for the most part, by the increase in the supply of nutrients from domestic and industrial effluents, in addition to having highly urbanized surroundings and with several changes in land use patterns. The preparation of this literature review made it possible to demonstrate that the effectiveness of river recovery is extremely complex, since river recovery projects are developed for different reasons, as well as being carried out in different ways according to the intended objective.

BACKGROUND: The screening process for systematic reviews and meta-analyses in medical research is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task. While machine learning and deep learning have been applied to facilitate this process, these methods often require training data and user annotation. This study aims to assess the efficacy of ChatGPT, a large language model based on the Generative Pretrained Transformers (GPT) architecture, in automating the screening process for systematic reviews in radiology without the need for training data. METHODS: A prospective simulation study was conducted between May 2nd and 24th, 2023, comparing ChatGPT's performance in screening abstracts against that of general physicians (GPs). A total of 1198 abstracts across three subfields of radiology were evaluated. Metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV), workload saving, and others were employed. Statistical analyses included the Kappa coefficient for inter-rater agreement, ROC curve plotting, AUC calculation, and bootstrapping for p-values and confidence intervals. RESULTS: ChatGPT completed the screening process within an hour, while GPs took an average of 7-10 days. The AI model achieved a sensitivity of 95% and an NPV of 99%, slightly outperforming the GPs' sensitive consensus (i.e., including records if at least one person includes them). It also exhibited remarkably low false negative counts and high workload savings, ranging from 40 to 83%. However, ChatGPT had lower specificity and PPV compared to human raters. The average Kappa agreement between ChatGPT and other raters was 0.27. CONCLUSIONS: ChatGPT shows promise in automating the article screening phase of systematic reviews, achieving high sensitivity and workload savings. While not entirely replacing human expertise, it could serve as an efficient first-line screening tool, particularly in reducing the burden on human resources. Further studies are needed to fine-tune its capabilities and validate its utility across different medical subfields.

During the postpartum period, psychological disorders may emerge. Aims and objectives: With the current study, we aim to explore the biological determinants that act on women during labor and incur the risk for postpartum depression (PPD). To reach the aim, we will perform the following tasks: (i) identify biological peripartum risk factors and calculate pooled prevalence of PPD for each of them; (ii) explore the strength of the relationship between peripartum risk factors and PPD; (iii) rank the predictors by their prevalence and magnitude of association with PPD. The knowledge obtained will support the development and implementation of early diagnostic and preventive strategies. Methods and analysis: We will systematically go through peer-reviewed publications available in the PubMed search engine and online databases: Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE. The scope of the review will include articles published any time in English, Arabic, or Polish. We will deduplicate literature sources with the Covidence software, evaluate heterogeneity between the study results, and critically assess credibility of selected articles with the Joanna Briggs Institute's bias evaluation tool. The information to extract is the incidence rate, prevalence, and odds ratio between each risk factor and PPD. A comprehensive analysis of the extracted data will allow us to achieve the objectives. The study findings will contribute to risk stratification and more effective management of PPD in women.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this comparative investigation was to examine the qualitative attributes of image reconstructions utilizing two distinct algorithms, namely OSEM and HYPER Iterative, in total-body 18F- FDG PET/CT under various acquisition durations and injection activities. METHODS: An initial assessment was executed using a NEMA phantom to compare image quality engendered by OSEM and HYPER Iterative algorithms. Parameters such as BV, COV, and CRC were meticulously evaluated. Subsequently, a prospective cohort study was conducted on 50 patients, employing both reconstruction algorithms. The study was compartmentalized into distinct acquisition time and dosage groups. Lesions were further categorized into three size-based groups. Quantifiable metrics including SD of noise, SUVmax, SNR, and TBR were computed. Additionally, the differences in values, namely ΔSUVmax, ΔTBR, %ΔSUVmax, %ΔSD, and %ΔSNR, between OSEM and HYPER Iterative algorithms were also calculated. RESULTS: The HYPER Iterative algorithm showed reduced BV and COV compared to OSEM in the phantom study, with constant acquisition time. In the clinical study, lesion SUVmax, TBR, and SNR were significantly elevated in images reconstructed using the HYPER Iterative algorithm in comparison to those generated by OSEM (p < 0.001). Furthermore, an amplified increase in SUVmax was predominantly discernible in lesions with dimensions less than 10 mm. Metrics such as %ΔSNR and %ΔSD in HYPER Iterative exhibited improvements correlating with reduced acquisition times and dosages, wherein a more pronounced degree of enhancement was observable in both ΔSUVmax and ΔTBR. CONCLUSION: The HYPER Iterative algorithm significantly improves SUVmax and reduces noise level, with particular efficacy in lesions measuring ≤ 10 mm and under conditions of abbreviated acquisition times and lower dosages.

Acute painful vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) is the common presentation of sickle cell disease (SCD) leading to emergency room visits, admissions, morbidity, mortality, and negative impacts on quality of life. Among various treatment approaches commonly employed to manage the condition, intravenous (IV) hydration is also frequently used in emergency and inpatient settings. Although helpful to overcome dehydration, IV hydration often leads to adverse outcomes like fluid overload, pulmonary edema, increased length of stay, transfer to intensive care unit, new oxygen requirement, etc. Small-scale retrospective studies are conducted to study the outcomes of IV hydration but have failed to conclusively demonstrate its benefits as well as choice of IV fluids, rate of IV fluid replacement, etc. We conduct this review as an attempt to summarize the available evidence on the role and utility of IV hydration in sickle cell crises along with reported adverse outcomes.

Different stakeholders, such as authors, research institutions, and healthcare professionals (HCPs) may determine the impact of peer-reviewed publications in different ways. Commonly-used measures of research impact, such as the Journal Impact Factor or the H-index, are not designed to evaluate the impact of individual articles. They are heavily dependent on citations, and therefore only measure impact of the overall journal or researcher respectively, taking months or years to accrue. The past decade has seen the development of article-level metrics (ALMs), that measure the online attention received by an individual publication in contexts including social media platforms, news media, citation activity, and policy and patent citations. These new tools can complement traditional bibliometric data and provide a more holistic evaluation of the impact of a publication. This commentary discusses the need for ALMs, and summarizes several examples - PlumX Metrics, Altmetric, the Better Article Metrics score, the EMPIRE Index, and scite. We also discuss how metrics may be used to evaluate the value of "publication extenders" - educational microcontent such as animations, videos and plain-language summaries that are often hosted on HCP education platforms. Publication extenders adapt a publication's key data to audience needs and thereby extend a publication's reach. These new approaches have the potential to address the limitations of traditional metrics, but the diversity of new metrics requires that users have a keen understanding of which forms of impact are relevant to a specific publication and select and monitor ALMs accordingly.


Different readers have different ways of deciding how important scientific articles are. The usual methods used to measure the impact of research, like the Journal Impact Factor or the H-index, are not meant to measure this for individual articles. These methods mainly look at how many times the articles are mentioned by others, and it can take a long time to see the impact.But in the past ten years, new tools called article-level metrics (ALMs) have been created. These tools measure how much attention an article gets online, like on social media, in the news, or when other researchers talk about it. ALMs are better at explaining how important a specific article is. They can work together with the usual methods to measure impact.This paper talks about why ALMs are important and gives examples of these tools, like PlumX Metrics, Altmetric, the Better Article Metrics score, the EMPIRE Index, and scite. It also explains how these tools can help us see the value of animations, videos, or summaries in simple language. These make it easier for more people to understand and learn from the articles.These new ways of measuring impact can help us see how important articles are in a more complete way. But because there are many different ways to measure this, it's important for users to understand which methods are relevant for a specific article and keep track of them.

BACKGROUND: PPAR-γ is one of three members of the PPAR group of the nuclear receptor superfamily and plays an important regulatory role as a ligand-dependent transcription factor. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the top 100 most influential articles in the field of PPAR-γ. We hypothesized that a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of the PPAR-γ research field could render trends that provide researchers and funding agencies valuable insight into the history of the field, and potential future directions. METHODS: A literature search of publications was carried out using the Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus database based on specific subject words on September 11, 2023. Articles were listed in descending order of the number of citations. Statistical analysis was performed on the data of the top 100 cited articles in terms of year of publication, journal, research direction, institution, author, and country. Meanwhile, co-authorship networks and co-citation networks were constructed by using VOSviewer software, and keywords were analyzed for cooccurrence. RESULTS: A total of 9,456 articles regarding PPAR-γ were identified and analyzed based on the WOS database, and the top 100 cited articles in the field of PPAR-γ were ranked by citation. The most cited article was published in 1998, with 2,571 citations and a density of 102.80 citations/ year. Of the 100 articles, Harvard University was the institution with the highest number of articles published. Spiegelman, B. M. was the author with the highest number of articles published. Using the VOSviewer software, we found that the most used keywords were geneexpression, activated receptor-gamma, and adipocyte differentiation. PPAR-γ, one of the most widely studied transcription factors, is an important drug target for many diseases. Therefore, screening for small molecule compounds targeting PPAR-γ remains of great value. CONCLUSION: The present study identified the top 100 most influential articles in the field of PPAR-γ, which help global researchers to better understand research perspectives and develop future research directions of PPAR-γ.

Our research activities would be better served if they were communicated in a manner that is openly accessible to the public and all researchers. The research we share is often limited to representative data included in research papers-science would be much more efficient if all reproducible research data were shared alongside detailed methods and protocols, in the paradigm called Open Science. On the other hand, one primary function of research journals is to select manuscripts of good quality, verify the authenticity of the data and its impact, and deliver to the appropriate audience for critical evaluation and verification. In the current paradigm, where publication in a subset of journals is intimately linked to research evaluation, a hypercompetitive "market" has emerged where authors compete to access a limited number of top-tier journals, leading to high rejection rates. Competition among publishers and scientific journals for market dominance resulted in an increase in both the number of journals and the cost of publishing and accessing scientific papers. Here we summarize the current problems and potential solutions from the development of AI technology discussed in the seminar at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan.

Publishing in reputable peer-reviewed journals is an integral step of the clinical pharmacy research process, allowing for knowledge transfer and advancement in clinical pharmacy practice. Writing a manuscript for publication in a journal requires several careful considerations to ensure that research findings are communicated to the satisfaction of editors and reviewers, and effectively to the readers. This commentary provides a summary of the main points to consider, outlining how to: (1) select a suitable journal, (2) tailor the manuscript for the journal readership, (3) organise the content of the manuscript in line with the journal's guidelines, and (4) manage feedback from the peer review process. This commentary reviews the steps of the writing process, identifies common pitfalls, and proposes ways to overcome them. It aims to assist both novice and established researchers in the field of clinical pharmacy to enhance the quality of writing in a research paper to maximise impact.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is one of the coffee producers ranked third in the world in the supply of coffee beans. To maintain competitiveness international market, it is necessary to maintain and improve the quality of coffee beans. OBJECTIVE: One crucial aspect of maintaining the quality of coffee beans is maintaining the moisture content of green coffee beans. One of the water content settings is using the drying method. While traditional drying methods often experience weather and long-time constraints. RESULTS: This study designed an innovative coffee bean dryer based on fuzzy logic to overcome the problem. This system uses temperature control with Mamdani's fuzzy logic control interference algorithm, input and delta errors, and output percentage valve opening. This method achieved a moisture content following SNI standards of 12% and a 0.00015% / s drying rate for each coffee bean mass increased by 1kg. This method is also more efficient and stable in maintaining the temperature at a value of 50°C. METHODS: The drying equipment also estimates the drying time by considering variations in the mass of coffee beans. This dryer can provide an effective solution to maintain optimal coffee bean quality. CONCLUSION: The second semi-wash method of drying coffee beans using a fuzzy logic-based coffee bean drier has proven successful for drying coffee beans to a moisture content of 12% in a period of 90 min to 195.65 min with a drying capacity of 1 kilogram to 10kg at 50°C.•The coffee beans utilized in the studies are robusta coffee beans from plantations on Mount Kawi's slopes in East Java, Indonesia.•The trial sample was 1 kilogram of green coffee beans removed from the horn skin.•According to SNI standards, the drying performed is the second in the postharvest semi-wash procedure to achieve a moisture content of 12%.

SARS-CoV-2 caused the pandemic of the rapidly evolving COVID-19. As of December 6, 2023, there were 765,152,854 COVID-19-recovering cases. Long-term consequences known as "long COVID" and "post-COVID-19 conditions" (PCCs) or "post-acute COVID-19 syndrome" are being reported more frequently in a subset of recovering patients. Systemic, neuropsychiatric, cardio-respiratory, and gastrointestinal symptoms are the most prevalent. The management of PCCs poses unique challenges due to the lack of official guidelines and the complex nature of the illness. This abstract highlights key principles derived from recent reviews and expert recommendations to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive approach to manage post-COVID-19 patients. Preventive medicine plays a crucial role in managing PCCs. While no specific medications are available for treatment, preventive measures such as COVID-19 vaccination, adherence to precautionary measures, regular consultations with medical professionals, monitoring symptoms and progress, and seeking information on symptom management are essential to assist patients in their recovery and improve their quality of life. Medical management requires transparent goal-setting and collaborative decision-making based on the patient's symptoms, comorbidities, and treatment objectives. Treatment plans for post-COVID-19 patients should focus on patient education, using registries and calendars to track symptoms and triggers, providing support and reassurance, and offering holistic support through peer networks and supportive psychotherapy techniques. Symptomatic and rehabilitative care, including well-established symptom management techniques, physical rehabilitation programs, and addressing mental health and well-being, are vital components of post-COVID-19 management. Lifestyle factors such as stress reduction, nutrition, and sleep should be incorporated into managing underlying medical conditions in post-COVID-19 patients. Regular follow-up visits and referrals to specialists are recommended to monitor the patient's progress and address specific organ system involvement or additional care needs. In summary, for the effective management of PCCs, a holistic approach should include preventive measures, patient education, supportive psychotherapy, symptomatic and rehabilitative care, medical management, counseling on lifestyle elements, and appropriate follow-up plans. However, it is crucial to stay updated with evolving guidelines and recommendations from healthcare authorities to provide the most effective and evidence-based care to post-COVID-19 patients.
